New Chillout album ‘ Voyage ‘ OUT NOW / 2021 July 7th

‘ Voyage ‘ is the first chill-out album by Supercozi, a Japanese female artist based in Nice Côte d’Azur, southern France.
Electronic chillout music has now gained mainstream popularity globally, and the listenership continues to grow daily, but there are still not many female producers in the world who can actually handle all the intricacies of programming, arranging and mixing on a computer from the start to the end. As one of the pioneering female producers, SUPERCOZI has released over 100 tracks under various names since 2000, from many respected labels world wide, ranging from chill-out and downtempo to deep house and techno.
This album is the result of her careful selection of downtempo tracks that take the listener on a journey.

She spent 16 long years in Bali, Indonesia before moving to Nice in 2018, and Hypo Espresso Records was founded in Bali in 2005 by her. At the time, she was a resident DJ at Bali’s popular spot KUDETA, and the word of ” Bali’s first stylish record label run by a Japanese DJ ” spread quickly. In 2007 and 2010, the label released a series of chill-out compilations ” Chillpresso 1 ~ dari bali ( 2007 ) ” and ” Chillpresso 2 dari bali ( 2010 ) ” , which were loved by many with sold out CDs. This had bring her opportunities to do the direction work of a limited edition Bespoke CD for the Bali’s high profile resorts & fashion brands including Bulgari and BIASA. This album contains six new versions of songs she has created for these projects in these exotic locations, as well as three sound designs for short films she has made since moving to France.

Having left her native Japan in 1999, SUPERCOZI has spent the last 20 years of her life as a digital nomad. Naturally, each song is like a soundtrack to a film, capturing a period of her life, her state of mind and the atmosphere of the place she was in at the time, as if vacuum-packed. As befits the French word ” Voyage “, which means ” Journey “, this is a work that could only have been made by a woman who has been on a voyage without a map.
The album was released in the hope that it would provide a breath of fresh air at a time when a sense of stagnation is widespread due to the Covid pandemic. We hope you enjoy the album while reading the episodes surrounding each song and feel the ray of dawn that will soon appear on the horizon.The next is a brief introduction to each song by the artist herself.

1 – Sayan Moon feat. Chika Asamoto 6:48
Originally composed and released digitally in 2015 as a part of a concept album ‘ BIASA ~ Deep Inside The Bamboo Forest ‘ for Bali based resort fashion brand BIASA‘s new collection.
Tune featuring mesmerizing, other-worldly saxophone improvisation by a respected, pioneer female Jazz saxophonists in Japan, Chika Asamoto who was also a Bali resident back then. I gave this title to the tune because she lived in Ubud, a cultural centre of Bali, and nearby Sayan is the name of a sacred valley for Balinese hindu. She also produced an experimental Jazz ambient album ‘ Catalpa ‘ in Norway with my ex-husband Gus Till in 2010.

2 – Distant Sparkle 1:01
1min sound design piece for an experimental art clip by a Monaco-Nice based Romanian Photographer Iulian Giurca. He asked me to express the shimmering light on the calm surface of the lake, which made the work sounds like an impressionist painting.

3- Dawn 5:07
Originally composed for 1minutes promotion clip of Space Mountain Festival – International Cosmic Arts Lab 2019 ( Andalusia / Spain ) that happened in a private studio property of Martin ‘ Youth ‘ Glover and it morphed into 5 minutes ambient down tempo.

4 – Stranger in Paradise 5:52
Fusion Asian chill with Balinese gamelan sounds scattered over a dubby bass, and for me it’s a very concentrated version of my time in Bali.
Originally released in 2010 as a part of a Bespoke CD ‘ The Villas Bali Vol. 1 ‘. Also featured in 2013 in a short clip by Zirbad, a freedive boat trip & life style company that operates across islands beyond Bali. Clip featured marine life images of the world renown dive spot Raja Ampat.

5 – Calabar Moon 7:30
Mysterious Arabic downtempo. It was created with the image of the full moon over the Alhambra in Spain. Originally released in 2009 as a part of a Bespoke CD ‘ Uluwatu Experience 1 – Bulgari Hotels & Resort Bali ‘.

6 – Aksara 2020 feat.Minima Sheen 5:55
‘ Aksara ‘ means ‘ alphabet ‘ in Indonesian. It’s odd beats ( 3/4 ) exotic tune. The lyrics are about the evolution that civilizations and women have gone through since ancient times. Originally released in 2010 as a part of second album ‘ Fruits From The Future ‘, featuring an old friend / singer Michele Adamson ( Shpongle ). Recording was done during Michele’s stay at my home in Seminyak, Bali where I spent 15 years with a music producer Gus Till. This new version extended original with additional sound and remastered with wider soundscape.

7 – Horizon, Horizon ( Paam 9 Mix ) 7:42
Originally released in 2009 as a part of a Bespoke CD ‘ Uluwatu Experience 1 – Bulgari Hotels & Resort Bali ‘.
I usually like to feature a different singer each time to sing a melody I’ve written, but this is my favorite jazzy broken beat song that I’ve sung myself. I love flute solo that goes in towards the ending, also lyrics – ‘ Horizon, you are my last love. Horizon, I have nothing to hide ‘ .
It’s funny that even though it was made in Bali, I often find myself wanting to listen to it when I’m driving along the Mediterranean Sea on the Côte d’Azur.

8 – Secret Garden 6:51
Same as ‘ Sayan Moon’, Originally composed for Bali’s popular resort fashion brand BIASA’s concept album. Featuring voice is BIASA founder / Italian expat fashion designer Susanna Perini, who also runs a contemporary Indonesian art gallery in Seminyak where I collaborated as a sound curator.

Sound design sketch I produced for my imaginary film that was formed by inspirations I captured during a trip in Tuscany / Italy in 2018.

新チルアウト・アルバム『ヴォヤージュ』が配信開始になりました。
以下はスペースシャワー公式リリースノートと私による各曲の短いエピソードです。

SUPERCOZI – ‘ VOYAGE ‘ ２０２１年７月７日発売

『 ヴォヤージュ 』は南仏ニース・コートダジュール在住の日本人女性アーティスト、Supercozi（スーパーコージ）による初のチルアウト・アルバムだ。
今でこそエレクトロニック・チルアウト音楽はメインストリーム的な人気をグローバルに獲得し、リスナーも日々拡大し続けているが、実際にコンピューターを駆使してプログラミング、アレンジ、ミックスなどの複雑な作業の全行程を自分一人で手がけることのできる女性プロデューサーは世界的にもまだまだ少ない。スーパーコージは女性プロデューサー先駆者の一人として、多様な名義で２０００年より世界中の著名レーベルより良質なチルアウト、ダウンテンポからハウス、テクノまで幅広い音楽を１００曲以上も世界に向けて発信し続けてきた。
そんな彼女の数ある作品から、特にリスナーをひと時の旅に誘うようなダウンテンポ作品を厳選して監修されたのが今作だ。

彼女は２０１８年にニースに再移住するまで、インドネシアのバリ島で実に１６年という長い年月を過ごしており、今作をリリースするハイポ・エスプレッソは彼女が主宰になって２００５年にバリ島で設立された音楽レーベルである。当時彼女はバリ島の人気スポット、クーデターでレジデントDJを務めており、” 日本人DJが主宰する、バリ島初のお洒落なレコードレーベル ”の噂は瞬く間に広がり、２００７年と２０１０年にレーベルがリリースした２枚のチルアウト・コンピレーションのシリーズ『 チルプレッソ 1 ダリバリ 』と『チルプレッソ 2 ダリバリ 』はともにCDが完売するなどスマッシュヒット。そのディレクションを買われ、彼女はブルガリ・リゾートがオープン時にゲストのみに販売した限定ビースポークCDや、欧米ファッション・デザイナー達が現地展開する人気リゾート・ファッション・ブランドなどのコレクション用音楽などを多数プロデュースした。本作にはそれらエキゾティックな複数のロケーションで彼女が様々なプロジェクトのために制作した6曲の新ヴァージョンと、彼女がフランスに移住してから短編映像作品のために製作した 3つのサウンドデザインが収録されている。

1999年に母国の日本を離れ、デジタル・ノマドとしての人生を20年以上にも及んで送ってきたスーパーコージ。自然にどの曲も映画のサウンドトラックのように彼女の人生のある時期を切り取っており、当時の彼女の精神状態やその場所の空気感をまるで真空パックしたかのように内包している。
旅という意味のフランス語『 ヴォヤージュ 』にふさわしく、これは地図のない航海を続けてきた彼女にしか作り得なかった作品だと言えるだろう。

コロナ禍で閉塞感が蔓延している時代において一服の清涼になればという思いでリリースされた本作品。各楽曲にまつわるエピソードを読みながらぜひ航海を楽しんでほしい。そして水平線にやがて現れるであろう夜明けの一筋の光を感じてほしい。下は彼女自身による各曲にまつわる簡単なイントロダクションだ。

1 – Sayan Moon feat. Chika Asamoto 6:48
バリ島で大人気のリゾート・ファッションブランドBIASAの２０１５年新作コレクションのためのコンセプトアルバム『 BIASA ~ Deep Inside The Bamboo Forest 』の一部として製作しデジタルでリリースされました。当時バリ在住だった著名日本人サックスプレイヤーの朝本千可さんによる、幽玄でどこか異次元の世界から聞こえてくるようなミステリアスなサックスの即興演奏が美しい楽曲です。この曲のタイトルはチカちゃんがバリの文化の中心地であるウブドにあるヒンドゥー教の聖なる谷サヤンの近くに住んでいらっしゃることから名づけました。

2 – Distant Sparkle 1:01
モナコとニースを拠点に活動するルーマニア人写真家ユリアン・ギウルカによる実験的なアートクリップのための1分間のサウンドデザイン作品です。
穏やかな湖面の揺らぐ光を表現して欲しいというリクエストで、印象派の絵画のような作品となりました。

3 – Dawn 5:07
スペインのアンダルシアで毎年開催されるスペースマウンテン・フェスティバルは、旧友の英国人プロデューサー/ミュージシャンのユース（キリングジョークのベーシスト / ポール・マッカートニーとのユニットFiremanなどをやっています）が自分所有のスタジオ敷地内で行うブティック・フェスティバルです。ザ・オーブなど英国のエレクトロニック音楽人気アーティスト陣をメインに２晩３日間に渡って行われ、述べ２千人ほどが訪れます。私も今年で３回連続で出演させていただくのですが、この曲は元々そのフェスの1分間のプロモーションクリップのために製作したものが５分のアンビエント・ダウンテンポに成長したものです。

4 -Stranger in Paradise 5:52
バリ島のガムランの音をダブ調のベースの上に散りばめた曲で、私にとって自分のバリ島時代をぎゅっと濃縮したような作品です。2010年にビースポークCD『 The Villas Bali Vol.1 』の一部としてリリースされました。また、2013年には、インドネシアの島々でフリーダイブのボートトリップ＆ライフスタイルを提唱しているジルバッド社のショートクリップにも使用されました。世界的に有名なダイビングスポット、ラジャアンパットの海洋生物の映像をフィーチャーした美しいクリップでした。

5 – Calabar Moon 7:30
ミステリアスな雰囲気をもつアラビック調のダウンテンポです。スペインのアルハンブラ宮殿にかかる満月をイメージしながら制作しました。2009年にリリースされたブルガリ・ホテルズ＆リゾート・バリのビースポークCD『 ウルワツ・エクスペリエンス 1 – ブルガリ ホテルズ＆リゾート バリ 』に収録されています。

6 – Aksara 2020 feat.Minima Sheen 5:55
’ アクサラ ’ はインドネシア語で ’ アルファベット ’ という意味で、３／４変拍子を使った呪術的な曲です。古代から文明や女性が歩んできた進化をテーマにした歌詞です。オリジナルは2010年にリリースされたセカンドアルバム『 Fruits From The Future 』収録で、旧友で世界的人気を誇る英国サイケデリック・バンド、シュポングルの歌姫ミシェル・アダムソンがミニマシーン名義で歌っています。今回の新バージョンでは、オリジナルにサウンドを追加し再編集。またより広いサウンドスケープでリマスターされています。

7 – Horizon, Horizon (Paam9 Mix) 7:42
’ Calabar Moon ’と同じく2009年のブルガリ・ホテルズ＆リゾート バリのビースポークCD『 ウルワツ・エクスペリエンス 1 – ブルガリ・ホテルズ＆リゾートバリ 』の一部としてリリースされた曲です。私は通常、毎回違うシンガーを起用して自分の作詞作曲したメロディーを歌ってもらうのが好きなのですが、自分自身で歌っている曲では一番気に入っているジャジーなブロークンビートの曲です。エンディングに向けて入るフルートの切なく疾走感のあるソロが大好きです。また’ 水平線よ、あなたが私の最後の恋人。私には隠さなければならない秘密などもう何もないわ ’という歌詞も気に入っています。バリ島で製作したのに、コートダジュールの地中海を見ながらドライブしている時によく聴きたくなるのが不思議です。

8 – Secret Garden 6:51
’ サヤン・ムーン ’と同じく、バリ島で人気のリゾートファッション・ブランド、ビアサのコレクション用コンセプトアルバムの一部として製作しました。
浮遊感のあるベル音と、風に優しくそよぐ竹林のようなシンセの重なりがゆったりした気持ちにさせてくれる作品です。
イタリア語で囁くように語っているのはビアサの創業者であり、セミニャックでインドネシアの現代アートギャラリーも経営しているイタリア人ファッションデザイナーのスザンナ・ペリーニ。私はこのギャラリーとブランドのサウンド・キュレイターとして長年一緒に仕事させていただきました。

9 – Tuscany 3:18
2018年のトスカーナ/イタリア旅行中に捉えたインスピレーションを元に形成された架空の映画のために制作されたサウンドデザインスケッチです。
